Other Swimmers who took part were: Olivia Nicholls, Natasha Rogan, Meghann Leaver, Alice Harding, Jasmin Scott, Niamh Robinson, Mesha Ingham-Francis, Jessica Magee, Chloe Shields, Lois Clossick, Joseph Murray, James Harding, John McKavett, and Thomas Gilroy
10 years: Olivia Nicholls and Natasha Rogan. Olivia competed in 9 individual events, qualifying 5th fastest for the final of the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 6.21.64. In the final she finished in 6th position in a time of 6.25.43. Olivia also finished in 8th position in the 400m Freestyle in a time of 5.34.03. In the 11 year boy’s category, Joseph Murray competed in 2 events, 100m Breaststroke, and 200m Breaststroke. In the 100m Breaststroke, he qualified in 4th place for the final in a time of 1.32.23 where he bettered his time to 1.29.59 taking 4th position. The 11 year girls category was a very busy age group this year, with 5 swimmers competing in 23 races in total, Meghann Leaver swam in 4 individual events; 100m, 200m, 400m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley. Alice Harding who also swims for Haslingden Swimming Club, competed in 5 individual events; 100m, 200m Freestyle, 200m, 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly, both Meghann and Alice swam extremely well in each event they competed, coming away with some great personal best times. Jasmin Scott who also swims for Accrington Swimming Club, competed in 7 individual events; 100m and 200m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke, 100m and 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley. Jasmin’s personal best time in the 100m Freestyle was only 1 second over the National Age Group Qualifying time prior to the Regionals, so her main aim during this gala was to try to achieve the 1.06. required for her to compete at this event in Sheffield during July. Unfortunately, during her individual swim, she didn’t quite manage the time, but she would have one last chance to get it during the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.
Niamh Robinson, also 11 years of age competed in 7 events during the 2 weekends of competition: In the 100m Backstroke, Niamh qualified for the final in 3rd position, however, she dropped down to 4th in the final in a time of 1.16.40. In the 200m Backstroke she qualified in 4th position, however, although bettering her time in the final, she finished in 5th position in a time of 2.41.78. In the 400m Individual Medley, not Niamh’s favourite event, she qualified in 3rd position for the final in a time of 5.49.42, just over 3 seconds slower than the National Age Group Qualifying Time, so, with a bit of gentle persuasion from her coach and parents, she reluctantly swam the final and managed to better her time to a fantastic 5.45.81, 1 second under the required National Qualifying Time and taking silver medal! In the 100m Breaststroke, she qualified 1st fastest for the final, during which she managed to just hold off the second placed swimmer by 1 tenth of a second! The 200m Breaststroke, Niamh’s favourite event, she qualified for the final in a time of 3.03.24, bettering her time in the final to 2.57.81 taking the gold medal in convincing form, some 8 seconds ahead of her next rival.
In the 13 year boys James Harding, who also competes for Haslingden Swimming Club, took part in the 100m Backstroke event, with a time of 1.11.21 he qualified for the final in 8th position. During the final, he maintained his position, however unfortunately, he swam slightly slower than in the heats.
The 14 year boys category, we had 2 swimmers, John McKavett and Thomas Gilroy. John took part in 4 events, the 100m and 200m Backstroke, 200m and 400m Freestyle with 8 swimmers going through to the finals in each event, John unfortunately just missed out and was placed as a reserve for the 200m and 400m Freestyle events. Although not making any finals, he swam extremely well and achieved some fantastic personal best times during the two weekends. Thomas Gilroy took part in the 100m Backstroke. Swimming a personal best time in the heats of 1.08.40, he qualified 7th fastest for the final. During the final, he picked up pace and stormed into 5th place in a time of 1.07.91. Thomas has now decided that he is increasing his training from his current 2-3 hours per week as the results he gained during this swim have inspired him to attend more sessions!!

In Team ‘A’ for the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay, Jasmin Scott started the girls off in an attempt to gain her National Qualifying Time for the 100m Freestyle, however, she just narrowly missed out, but next in was Jessica Magee (12) followed by Mesha Ingham Francis (12) and finishing with Niamh Robinson. Lois, who hasn’t taken part in many open swimming competitions rose to the occasion, and swam a fantastic time of 1.09! Well done.
