Annual Championships - Award Winners Archive

______________________________________________________________

Over the past couple of months I have been compiling a record of the trophy winners in the club’s annual championships.

It seems that the first trophies awarded were in 1989. The first winners were:

                        Best Boy Swimmer – Owen Hurcombe

                        Best Girl Swimmer – S Kenyon (Suzanne or Simone?)

                        Male Outstanding Swim – J McKeown

It would seem logical that there was also a ‘Female Outstanding Swim’ in 1989, but the first name engraved on the trophy is in 1992.

The open event trophies appear to have been awarded for the first time in 1990, with the first ‘age group’ trophies for the under 10’s beginning in 1997.
The rest of the age group trophies appear in the year 2000, with under 16’s awards being presented for the first time in 2003.

Unfortunately there are gaps on some of the trophies where the winners’ names have not been engraved. The most glaring omissions are in the Ladies Open 100m Breaststroke where the trophy went missing and had to be replaced in 2000. If anyone reading this can fill in any of the missing names, or knows the whereabouts of the missing trophy please contact me on treasurer@pioneer79.com

All the information on trophy winners in the annual championships is taken from existing cups and shields. There are questions that arise from these statistics like;

Were there any awards before 1989?
When were the first club championships staged?
Why were there under 10 trophies in 1997 when the other age group trophies do not start until 2000?

If you can answer any of the above questions, have any old championship programmes prior to the year 2000, or have any information on the early club years, please contact me on the above e mail address.
